It’s complicated

22 01 2010

I went to see the movie “It’s complicated” last night. It had been a hard, exhausting week and we both really needed a laugh.

The movie didnt score that well on rottentomatoes but we didnt care. We had seen the sneak previews so we decided to give it a go anyways. I must say i got a little bit worried when most of the people at the movie theatre turned out to be female and over 50 (maybe because it was a thursday evening ?) but that fear very quickly got replaced by tears in my eyes from laughing.

The story is about two ex’s Jane and Jake, played by Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, who have been divorced for ten years after a marriage of twentysomething years but still get along. Jake is remarried to a woman half his age (who he cheated on his ex with) with a “diabolical 5 y/o stepson”, Jane is still single and is watching the last of their three children leave the house to go to college. At the party for their son’s college graduation they find themselves in the hotel bar, where they start reminiscing, drinking and dancing to finally end up in bed together. And suddenly Jane is her ex husband’s mistress, with his current wife in the same position Jane found herself in ten years before (Karma can be a bitch indeed). They try to continue the affair while hiding it from their friends and family but things get a little more complicated when Jane falls in love with her architect, Adam, played by Steve Martin (what on earth happened to his face and eyes ??) .

What follows could have been a very cliché storyline but it actually turns into an extremely funny movie, which made a lot of people, including me, almost fall on the floor laughing at times (the scene with the Macbook ! Hilarious).

Maybe it was because we were desperate for some laughs but I personally thought this was the funniest movie I had seen in a while.

So if you’re looking for an evening of (easy and a lot) of laughs and not a heavy storyline, I think you should absolutely go see it !
